Living in challenging times does not stop us from living. Life must and does go on. Although our routines may not be what they were pre-Covid-19, we know how to adapt. We are smart and creative. We now shop, work and play differently. And staying positive, open minded and questioning is essential in overcoming any crisis.
I feel great sadness for people affected by Covid-19 – directly or indirectly. But I remain optimistic and believe that we can come out of this crisis with many positive teachings and aspects.
Dutch stoicism
The Dutch are embracing the intelligent lock-down imposed by their parliament with stoic calmness. They have been quietly enjoying the spring weather by taking to the roads on their bikes. Not uncommon in this ‘king of cycling’ country.
Common sense is what’s expected from the Dutch. The state does not want to function as a nanny. People are asked to keep 1.5 metres apart. Not form large groups and only go to the shops for essentials.
Frisse neus halen – dutch saying meaning ‘going out’
Premier Rutte of the Netherlands has mentioned on many occasion that it’s good for people to go out for a ‘frisse neus’ – literally translated – getting a fresh nose. And this ‘frisse neus halen’ is encouraged once a day.
For our daily dose of fresh air we cycled to some of the most iconic towns near Amsterdam. Normally these towns would have been overrun with tourists but at the moment they are tranquil. This quietness gives you an opportunity to admire them in a different light. I for one find it easier to look around and absorb their historic beauty.
And strangers are talking to each other. I have spoken to many people who spontaneously started chatting – at a safe distance – of course.
Broek in Waterland, Monnickendam and Volendam
We cycled to Broek in Waterland, Monnickendam and Volendam on 3 separate excursions. Cycling to these places from the centre of Amsterdam takes you through breathtaking wetland scenery. The land lies below sea level, there is an abundance of waterfowl and new-born animals. Cycle paths are abundant and motorists drive instinctively with caution.
Cycling forces the air into your lungs, the rain or sun caresses your face, it’s non polluting and provides exercise. It allows for reflection and pure enjoyment. Life is beautiful people – enjoy it wherever you are and stay positive!
Herewith a little video of our excursions.
